Abstract

This book begins with the assumption that in today's legal market each of us as a lawyer is a business our own business Whether we are selfemployed or work for a private firm public interest or government office or in a nonlegal position we need to understand our own balance sheet What are our assets and liabilities What are our shortterm and longterm business plans How do we implement our business plans For which contingencies do we prepare What are our accounts receivables What investments have we made and need to make in our businesses This book covers four topics 1 the changing economics of the legal profession and resulting consequences for law students and practicing lawyers focusing on the changing business model of private law practice an updated calculus of public interestgovernment employment vis à vis private employment impact of technology on the delivery of legal services 2 personal financial planning basics addressing the twentyplus major financial decisions most lawyers will face during their careers including educational debt repayment monetary implications of different career paths negotiating less than fulltime employment establishing one's own practice 3 Emotional Intelligence EQ issues covering predictable life crises in adulthood particularly for attorneys including topics such as using one's strengths dealing with stress maintaining resilience in the face of hardships 4 "free agency" how to market oneself as an effective free agent throughout one's career given the fact that the average attorney changes jobs seven times in a career This section builds on industrial psychology studies of effective "star performers" in the workplace and discusses specific steps law students and lawyers can take to thrive in the legal market ahead
