Abstract
Reviews recent writing on innovations in policing including broken windows community policing the hotspots approach pulling levers thirdparty policing and Compstat evidencebased policing Discusses reactions to heavyhanded policing by poor or minority communities including antisnitching campaigns and immigration support organizations such as Humane Borders Reviews corridos folklore and resistance movements such as the Black Panthers and suggests that policing in minority communities is unlikely to succeed until the police cede some of their authority to the communities themselves and engage them as genuine partners in making life safer
