The past never ends
Jackson Burnett
"... a fast-paced read that pulls together into a surprising ending." – the 5 star review from Open Book Society A simple task, Attorney Chester Morgan thinks. Obtain a copy of the incident report for a young man whose only friend has died in an unexplained accidental death. Except... The police file regarding the demise of sex worker Tanya Everly has been sealed by order of the chief of police, and no one will talk. Warned to drop the matter, Attorney Morgan knows that if he doesn't speak for the dead young woman, no one will. Haunted by his discovery of the body of a prominent local oilman, Morgan pursues a disturbing quest for justice that takes him into the dark shadows of the sex-for-sale business, into the marble courtrooms of Oklahoma, and into the aching loneliness of his own soul. Attorney Chester Morgan may speak for Tanya Everly, but will anyone listen? From the Currentland review: "Jackson Burnett is a vivid wordsmith, telling his story with genius strokes of color and depth. His language is both fluid and elegantly descriptive." Set in the American Southwest in the days before 9/11, The Past Never Ends is both a complex murder mystery and a meditation on the self-perpetuating nature of injustice and the ethereal nature of justice itself.

The Justice Tapes
Herbert Beigel
The time is 1998. As negotiations for a lasting peace between Protestants and Catholics in Northern Ireland are stalled, historian Cornelius Michael Sullivan of Belfast, Northern Ireland travels to New York City to conduct research for a book he is writing on Irish Americans, a trip he makes despite leaving his wife and daughter, and while his father, a former IRA functionary, is dying of emphysema. In New York, Cornelius encounters a Jewish lawyer in an Irish pub who immediately engages him in conversation, a somewhat one-sided conversation as it turns out, in which the lawyer regales him with intriguing tales from his thirty-year career as a trial lawyer. Cornelius is unaware that this meeting is no mere happenstance, and that he is to play a pivotal role in a plot to free a convicted IRA terrorist from Rikers Island Prison before his scheduled deportation in two weeks. The meetings between Cornelius and the mysterious lawyer take place over thirteen nights, and Cornelius tape records what the lawyer says about his life and the cases in which he was involved, stories that bear an eerie connection to ongoing events, as Cornelius finds himself trapped in a world of violence, betrayal, and conflicting loyalties. Throughout, we witness the journey of these two very different men, each embittered by the laws conflict with justice, as they become partners in the search for justice and redemption.

The racketeer
John Grisham
Who is the racketeer? And what does he have to do with the judge's untimely demise? His name is Malcolm Bannister, a former attorney now incarcerated at the Federal Prison Camp near Frostburg Maryland. When a federal judge and his secretary fail to appear for a scheduled trial and panicked clerks call for an FBI investigation, a harrowing murder case ensues and culminates in the imprisonment of a lawyer who imparts the story of who killed the judge and why. Given the importance of what they do, and the controversies that often surround them, and the violent people they sometimes confront, it is remarkable that in the history of this country only four active federal judges have been murdered. Judge Raymond Fawcett has just become number five. His body was found in the basement of a lakeside cabin he had built himself and frequently used on weekends. When he did not show up for a trial on Monday morning, his law clerks panicked, called the FBI, and in due course the agents found the crime scene. There was no forced entry, no struggle, just two dead bodies, Judge Fawcett and his young secretary, and one state-of-the-art, extremely secure safe, opened and emptied. I did not know Judge Fawcett, but I know who killed him, and why. I am a lawyer, and I am in prison. It's a long story. -- From book jacket
