Abstract
This paper is in response to a query from a colleague whose son a promising high school runner was considering UCBerkeley Knowing that I am a former runner she asked me about the school s running program political and intellectual atmosphere and the legacy of 1960sera track coach and Dean of Students Brutus Hamilton after whom the track stadium is named Her question prompted me to reflect upon my own career as a law professor and the role of mentors and advisors in helping the young navigate lifes shoals
