Abstract
This essay introduces the 20112012 Meador Lecture Series on Boundaries The essay introduces the concept of "boundaries" generally and also makes the argument that frequently legal decisionmaking depends upon the application of a rule "“ which may not itself be defensible against other plausible rules "“ to create a specific criterial boundary for an otherwise vaguelybounded concept The essay then briefly considers the coherence and necessity of this method of legal decisionmaking
