Abstract
Controversies pitting free speech against equality continue unresolved The authors address four issues that arise in campus hate speech regulation as well as with other incidents of hate speech The issues are 1 strategy and use of resources within the progressive camp 2 the costs of a freespeech regime versus one that puts antiracism first 3 interest balancing and 4 a tendency to frame the issue as one of procedure rather than substance
