Abstract
This essay explores the concept of empire and the problems with delineating its scope and contours As a way of examining these problems it examines the relationship between the concept of empire and the concept of law through different jurisprudential views of the latter This essay serves as an introduction to the Meador Lectures on Empire which were presented at the University of Alabama School of Law during 200708 The lectures were given by Daniel Hulsebosch José Alvarez Herbert Hovenkamp and Michele Goodwin
