Abstract
Empathy is said to be a valuable trait and in short supply especially among judges who would benefit by developing more of it In this Rodrigo chronicle part of a continuing series my alter ego and his straight man the Professor express their doubts Empathy can be false misguided or sentimental consisting of useless breastbeating In a famous example a wife gives her husband a pair of tickets to the opera he gives her a lug wrench Each present is something the giver would have wanted but the recipient does not The chronicle discusses various kinds of false empathy and how to avoid them
