The Alta Lamar King Letters Collection consists of twenty-seven letters from national correspondents in support of Judge Alta Lamar King’s decision in the famous 1957 Alabama trial, Joe P. Pritchett v. State (40 Ala.App. 498). This 1957 case decision is remarkable for King’s maximum sentencing of a KKK member for the mutilation of an African American man. Additionally, the collection holds numerous newspaper clippings from across the country in support of King’s decision.
